This group offers support and counselling to women who have been involved in abusive relationships. Prior to the start of the group, each client is interviewed to gain an understanding of her concerns and needs. The group consists of 10 sessions, and focuses on the effects of domestic abuse, ways of coping as well as techniques for recovery.
Group membership offers an opportunity to share experiences in an accepting, supportive and confidential environment. It provides a safe atmosphere in which to gain trust, empowerment and self-determination.
Members will examine power and control tactics used by abusers (e.g., intimidations, emotional and verbal abuse, threats), and learn to recognize warning signs in future relationships. The group experience allows women to integrate childhood experiences with present-day relationships, while issues such as anger, guilt, and depression will also be explored. Our goal is working towards healthy relationships based on equality and mutual respect.
By exploring the ways in which institutions and cultural beliefs reinforce abusive behaviour in our society, members' ability to think critically and, thus, achieve personal and social change will be enhanced.
