THIS TYPE OF VIOLENCE OCCURS IN ALL AGE, EDUCATION, ECONOMIC, SOCIAL, RACIAL, AND CULTURAL GROUPS.

THE ESTIMATED NUMBER OF BATTERED WOMEN LIVING WITH MEN IS BETWEEN ONE IN TEN AND ONE IN TWO

  1. Many women believe they provoke their partner's abuse and they did something to deserve it.
  2. They believe that if THEY change what THEY do or say, their partners will stop the abuse.
  3. Many women feel guilty for the violence occurring.
  4. Most women deny their terror and the anger they feel.
  5. Many are traditional about the prescribed feminine sex roles.
  6. Most are very concerned with keeping their families together and supporting their partners and children TOTALLY.
  7. Most women are ashamed of their injuries.
  8. Most try to hide the fact that this is happening in their homes.
  9. Many women believe that this happens only to them and to no one else.
  10. Many women also believe that no one can help them.
  11. Women typically underestimate their ability to do things.
  12. Many do NOT believe that they can take care of themselves.
  13. Most women demonstrate incredible endurance in surviving and maintaining their "systems" (e.g.: children).
  14. Many women try to control their husband's anger and keep him from getting upset or annoyed.
  15. Women believe the myths about battering.
