  Common Characteristics of Men Who Batter Their Partners


  1. Most batterers deny any responsibility for their violent behaviour
  2. Batterers tend to blame everyone and everything else for their actions (e.g.: wife or girlfriend, alcohol, mother, stress, no money, etc.)
  3. Many are insecure, immature, and insensitive.
  4. Most batterers often drink to excess to deal with stress or boredom.
  5. Batterers are often emotionally, verbally, and sexually abusive as well as being physically abusive.
  6. Most batterers are "traditional" in outlook, identify themselves as "MACHO MEN", and believe in male supremacy both inside and outside of the family.
  7. Many batterers admit that they hate women in general.
  8. Many batterers believe they must use violence "TO TEACH THE WOMAN A LESSON".
  9. Most batterers are excessively jealous and possessive.
  10. Most try to become overly involved in the woman's activities.
  11. Most batterers do not believe that their violent behaviour should have negative consequences for them (e.g.: they do not believe that they deserve to be punished for their actions.)
  12. Most batterers believe some or all of the myths about battering.
