Dating violence is any intentional physical, psychological or sexual assault on one partner by the other in a dating relationship. Women of all ages may choose to enter into dating relationships. Some women may be assaulted on their first date, while others may experience abuse after dating for a long time. A wide range of destructive behaviours can occur in dating relationships and must be taken seriously.
Indicators of Potential Abuse in Dating Relationships- Verbal and physical threats of violence
- Obsession with domination and control
- Physically/emotionally abusive role models in the past
- Expression of possessiveness, jealousy
- Public humiliation, degradation

- It will never happen to me!
- "Name Calling" or "play fighting" doesn't hurt anyone!
- You can tell whether a person will be abusive by their looks
- Jealousy is a sign of how much I'm loved
- There are greater risks of being assaulted by strangers
- If I am hit, I must have provoked it in some way
- Women stay in abusive dating relationships because they enjoy being abused
- Men cannot control their sexual urges
- The abuse happened because too much alcohol was consumed!!!
Between 16% and 35% of women surveyed say they have experienced at least one physical assault by a male dating partner (Kelly & DeKeseredy, 1993).
